WATCH: Inside the Next Civil Rights Movement and The Grassroots Fight For a Right to a Quality Education
Across the country there’s a growing, passionate movement to enshrine educational equity in law — led by activists aiming to create a new constitutional right to quality schools.
Thus far, it’s a grassroots fight that’s been playing out primarily in states, with the goal of expanding and sharpening state constitutions to better protect students and families. In a recent panel discussion organized by both The 74 and the Progressive Policy Institute’s Reinventing America’s Schools Project, we hosted advocates who spoke about the escalating movement — as well as tools that parents can use to demand change in their own districts as well.
Today we’re thrilled to offer a complete replay of the Feb. 2 event, featuring Minnesota state Rep. Hodan Hassan, Chris Stewart of Brightbeam, Nevada Littlewolf of Our Children Minnesota, Lakisha Young of The Oakland REACH and Christina Laster of the National Parents Union. The conversation was moderated by Reinventing America’s Schools Co-Director Curtis Valentine.
